We Gave Our Consent is a series of four images that explore the reasons why we willingly submit ourselves to surveillance. The Vetting of Public Figures captures a presumed extramarital affair between Democratic presidential primary front-runner Gary Hart and Donna Rice in 1987. Acting on a tip, and after much deliberation, reporters from the Miami Herald staked out his D.C. townhome in an attempt to confirm the rumors. She was caught leaving his home, and he was confronted at a press conference soon after. The above image, was published in a tabloid paper in the weeks after Gary Hart suspended his campaign. Donna Rice sits on his lap, and Hart wears a t-shirt that reads, “Monkey Business”, the name of the Yacht the two were rumored to have vacationed on together. The mosaic shows Willy Horton, a convict, who became the "image of the criminal" in George Bush Sr.'s television ad campaign for being touch on crime. In the era surrounding the Bush, a slowly sensationalizing news media disproportionately focused on incidents of violent crime, with undue focus on areas of dense urban fabric populated by African American and Latino minorities.
